Weltklasse Zürich took place for the first time on August 12, 1928. At that time, the event was called «Internationales Leichtathletik-Meeting Zürich» (International Athletics Meeting Zurich). It has been known by its current name since 1959. Until 2009, it was part of the IAAF Golden League, which was later replaced by the Diamond League. Women took part for the first time in 1965. In 1968, the first meeting on a synthetic track in Europe was held at the Letzigrund Stadium. 1974 was the first time that the event was timed electronically and broadcast live on television. In 2007, the meeting took place in the new Letzigrund Athletics Stadium and attracted over 26,000 spectators. In 2021, a second day of events was introduced at Sechseläutenplatz. Today, Weltklasse Zürich is considered the world's most prestigious athletics event and is one of the top events in Switzerland.
