When is Indian Summer in Canada?

When you talk about Indian Summer, you almost automatically think of Canada. But when does this wonderful time take place there? And where is it most beautiful?

Ontario and Quebec are the most impressive

From mid-September, the foliage in Canada's forests begins to glow in all shades of purple, vermilion, gold, and copper. Indian summer is just around the corner. The splendor of this riot of color in the vast forests is incomparable. The color spectacle is most impressive in the eastern states of Ontario and Quebec. As a rule, the leaves change color first in mountainous areas and in the north. Then the phenomenon spreads southward. A single freezing night is enough to ignite the fireworks of colors. The blaze of color lasts until late October. Then the trees lose their leaves, and soon their branches are covered with snow.

In Indian Summer, substances that were previously covered by chlorophyl have their big moment: carotenoids provide yellow and orange, anthocyanins red and brown. The main actors in this colorful spectacle are the various birch and maple species. Eastern Canada in particular attracts thousands of so-called «leaf peepers» during Indian Summer.
